Social Psychology Social Proof

Everyone Picked This

You will face a series of everyday choices. First go with your gut. Then the crowd shows up with star ratings and big numbers. You get to decide again.

1Make a quick first pick on your own.
2See what the crowd supposedly prefers.
3Lock in a final pick and learn how often the crowd flipped you.

Social Proof

Social proof is when we treat the popularity of a choice as evidence that it is correct, copying the crowd especially when we are unsure.

It powers herd behavior, fads, and the fake-review economy: "most popular" can be manufactured, yet it still steers what we buy, watch, and believe.
